The naturalist is George Edwards, born in West Ham in 1694. After an apprenticeship in the city, he travelled to Holland and Scandinavia where he was seized as a spy (did his innocent observations of animals and birds give rise to suspicion?) He returned home to study fossils, make drawings of animals and spent 21 years writing a great History of Birds - painting 500 scenes never before seen. The prison reformer is Elizabeth Fry (1780-1845), who lived at the house called the Cedars in West Ham Park. She was the first woman to campaign for better conditions in prisons. She married into the Quaker family best known as chocolate manufacturers. She found her life’s purpose when visiting Newgate Prison in 1813, finding 300 women and children living in filth and neglect.... |
